Coming up with great company name ideas can be one of the hardest initial parts of starting a business. It needs to be enticing, unique, and memorable. Here are a few backstories on how some of the most unique company names came about:
The name for telecommunications company Skype derived from the idea of “Sky peer-to-peer”, which was then abbreviated to “Skyper”. Some of the domain names associated with “Skyper”, however, were already taken, so the final “r” was dropped, leaving the company with the name as we know it, Skype, for which domain names were available.
There were quite a few name changes for this online store. Founder Jeff Bezos originally named the company Cadabra, but changed it a year later after a lawyer misheard the name as “cadaver”. Bezos purchased the URL Relentless.com and briefly considered naming the store Relentless, but friends told him that it sounded somewhat sinister. He then spent some time looking through the dictionary and settled on Amazon, because it was “exotic and different”, and it was also the biggest river in the world, which is what he wanted his online store to be – the biggest in the world.
Multinational corporation technology company Cisco Systems Ltd. got its name from the city San Francisco – which is why the company’s engineers insisted on using lower case letters in its early years. The company logo is intended to resemble the two towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Multinational entertainment company Netflix got its name from a combination between two words: “Net” is derived from the word “Internet”, and “Flix” is simply a shortened version of the word “flicks” – which is a synonym for a movie.
Unilever, multinational fast moving consumer good company, was formed by a merger of the operations of Dutch Margarine Unie and British soap maker Lever Brothers. The name came as a result of a portmanteau of the two company names put together.
